Sagewood Herb Farm is situated in a tiny, pre-revolution era village called Usquepaug, in the heart of beautiful South County, Rhode Island. The village grist mill, on the Queen's River, continues to grind corn today with its original mill stones, just as it has for over 200 years. Fourteen years ago, it was our great blessing to become stewards of this land. The house was built in 1743 and retains the charm of a simpler time.

The old stone barn foundations and surrounding stone walls have been enveloped by the returning woodlands and beautiful gardens. The diverse habitats support much native wildlife. We are grateful to have nearly 200 species of healing plants growing in various wild spaces and gardens.

We believe in walking lightly upon the earth, so we use only organic/bio-dynamic cultivation practices. We are mindful that each day the choices we make have an impact on others. The intention behind our commitment to ecological sustainability is to make a positive difference for the planet and all living beings. This is the guiding principle in our lives and at the heart of all that we do.

In 2006, we felt deeply grateful and honored to become Rhode Island's first United Plant Savers (UpS) Botanical Sanctuary!

We offer healthy, vibrant plants -- some of which are on the UpS "at-risk" or "to watch" lists. These plants have become endangered in many areas due to habitat destruction and poor harvesting practices by unwary or unscrupulous harvesters. It is our hope to become a trusted resource for these organically cultivated (not wild harvested) healing plants, and also a source for inspiration and information.

We open our gardens to visitors by appointment and offer seasonal classes on topics ranging from Growing Medicinal Herbs, to Making Herbal Products, to Wreath Making and more. Visitors are encouraged to meander through the display gardens, native woodland, pond, stream and bog habitats, rest at one of the shaded tables or comfortable chairs nestled among the gardens, or find their own nook and look for evidence of the fairies!

Inviting people back to the garden, reminding them that the best medicine for body, mind and spirit is a deep connection to Mother Earth is our hearts' desire. Come join us, meet kindred spirits, as we weave shared plant wisdom and community into an ever-widening circle of green.
